Creative orkney conference

Had to set up work for the creative conference at the St. Magnus Centre which ran over the weekend, which I couldn't attend due to work.

What I have started looking into

I'm interested in orcadian folklore at the minute and reading stories about Snorro the Dwarf who lived in the Dwarfie Stone at Hoy and the selkie folk who could go on land as long as they shed their seal skins but who may be captured by orcadians who took their skins- brings back memories of hearing these from childhood

Happy anniversary! :)

It's been a year since I started this blog and have enjoyed doing it and will continue it on, as I find it a useful tool for me and my work and thinking!

Important day in Scottish history

It's all we have been hearing and seeing on news and social media for months and with absolutely no escape from it this past week, today is THE day Scotland goes to the polls on whether we should be independent from the UK or not it's a big day for Scotland either way it goes.

Meet and greet

Had a meet and greet at the college this afternoon between portfolio classes and BA students- I made some doodlebugs :)

So over nibbles we had a chance to mingle with one another. But there was no bowls for the nibbles so being the creative souls that we are, made vessels to hold things!

More photos

I'm doing this at stupid-o-clock in the morning but with the laptop being on and taking a break from the packing seemed a fine enough time to upload some more photos taken from the beach visit the other day. And besides with the move to a new flat happening on Sunday (I found a place!) I will have no internet for a bit so  updates may been more sketchy than normal!

Window display

I helped out making a window display down at Croys- an extra sub building the art department rents, which is now the textile hub. As part of the Wilder Being programme, which is under the umbrella of the Being Human initiative run by the Uinversity of London, some display of findings from a weekend in Sanday had to shown. And croys windows right on the street was best.

College jaunt to the beach

Went to the Bay of Meil- which I have never been to. Was basically a day of experimenting and working with what you could find lying around.
All very experimental but this is where it starts for further development.

A photo taken by one of the tutors, taken from the art departments Facebook page- I'm in the foreground, just experimenting with bits and pieces I found about the shore and my college student, Norna in the background there!

Got very taken with this glove I found - has quite sinister undertones. Does remind me of the story of the Lopness Monster just learnt about as part of the Wilder Being project. Where this monster sits out in the ocean and watches people on the beach and collects rubbish to try and protect the environment.

And then in the afternoon we went a visit to a mound of red sandstone which is one of a few places where the stone is quarried for the St. Magnus Cathedral
Lovely views!

Blood swept lands and seas of red

Installation by the ceramic artist Paul Cummins and the stage designer Tom Piper. It will end up showing 888,246 ceramic poppies at the Tower of London, each poppy representing a British soldier who fought in WW1, with this being the centenary it's very much in the public eye. Each poppy has been handmade and members of the public can buy and install it themselves if they so wish to personally remember a family member.
It's an ongoing installation at the minute with the final poppy being installed on November 11th- Rememberance Day.
Absolutely beautiful  But very much a labour of love in Rememberance of those who fought for our freedom 100 years ago.

Hectic

I have a post half written about the ceramic poppies which I should have had finished before now and uploaded but never mind. It's just been hectic this past week with lots going on, back to brownies, working, my birthday (see my cake!) and being asked a favour to paint a mural on my good friends, daughters bedroom wall, in their new house. Not at a worthwhile stage to show a photo yet

My dad decourated my birthday cake, did a very good job I would say!
