This is the future, here and now

3D printing pen - awesome! Things can create with it are endless. I have no doubt in a few years to come these pens will become the norm

Mesmerizing video!

This video I stumbled across and I love this installation! The artist is Zimoun that created this in the museum windows of Museo d'Arte di Lugano in Switzerland. Uses the S shape packing material or 'peanut' packaging along with industrial fans to create this wave-like installation.

Love it when a plan comes together!

On this lovely Sunday afternoon with a LOT of help from my dear friends I got my dome!

Starting from this... Alkathene pipe screwed into a circle with tent poles layed out over crossing one another

Then after drilling the holes could bend the tent poles into shape, the first one bent the pipe into an oval but after the other 2 tent poles were bent into shape...

Perfect one person size!

Motivational music!

working away, iPod on shuffle. The Chair come on. Nothing quite like a bit of local Orkney music talent to keep you going!

Presentation research

I got myself a copy of the Orkney Dictionary, I have been borrowing a copy from the library for months so finally decided to buy my own copy not only for my current artwork but also as a nod to my granddad who was the fountain of all knowledge when it came to Orcadian words and I am missing this heritage aspect of my life nowadays.

Anyway, with preparing my presentation for Tuesday I looked in this book to check a definition and found the following, which is perfect and have used it in my presentation!

A word for the Bairns

Oh bairns be prood to use the words
That in this book* you’ll find
Mak sure they’re often on yer lips
And always in yer mind

And then wan day you’ll realise
When you are no so young
That Orkney’s greatest treasure is
By far its mither tongue

Big 'string' balls

Found wire that keeps it's structure so finally got use if my space hopper... Other than its primary function of course!
Secured the wire with duct tape, which looks like it has been soldered from a distance so quite happy with the result!
It is quite time consuming as have to fully inflate the space hopper and then deflate it completely to remove it.

Creative space

This is my space at college- looks like a lot is going on even if sometimes it doesn't feel like it!

Jack of NO trades

This project has formed into something I have no experience in and I am going to create a good laugh when I go into some of the industrial areas tomorrow on the hunt for pipe and connectors in the hope of making my 'tent'

Along the right lines

I got hold of tent I have used only once for T in the Park 4/5 years ago and set it up.

The idea was good but the shape wasn't right but the sheet worked well enough that I got the shadow lines inside the tent that I wanted. I'm really wanting an oval shape or even just a giant string ball but with time running low and no budget just have to keep trying something slightly less ambitious!

Back to basics

Well this was me last night, by candlelight working in sketchbooks! There was a powercut, which was a bit unexpected in the middle of April. Have since found out this morning that it wasn't just Orkney but most of the north of Scotland. I must say that due to having no access to tv or the internet it did force me to work in my sketchbooks that I've put off for a while!

Painting sheets

Yesterday went up to the college to get some large space to paint onto sheets, did take me over 3 hours to do!

First had to project images of the string balls onto a sheet and trace the lines

Then it was a case of painting the lines in black, which took hours being so big and a few sheets to do .

Looked very interesting when the sheets were hung up to dry with all the layers. Now I have to use these sheets and make into a structure, I have an idea in my head of how I want it to look but may be problematic. Just have to wait and see!

Field of lights

Bruce Munro's installation at St. Andrews square, Edinburgh
Was a spectacular sight to see but unfortunately, by the time got into Edinburgh and got to St. Andrews square  it had been closed off so couldn't walk around, so I really didn't get good photographs from leaning over the fence. The video is slightly better, especially that you can hear the music - It was a lovely scene of calm just what I was needing after a day of traveling!

Easter break and out of the UK

These I did 2 days ago up at college, which I have failed to upload earlier as I am now in Hamburg, Germany visiting my oldest sister and nephews.

Anyway I tried to create an enclosed cloth structure, one version of many shown in the 2nd image, and all versions still not happy with!
The projections were created from acetate printed images of my own cut down to size, which take on a new form as it's merely a few cms of an A4 acetate image you can view on the slide projector.
Still need to problem solve on the structure!
