Spinning wheel

I borrowed a spinning wheel from For Arts Sake to use within the display at the exhibition at the Pier Arts Centre. Was just told it was given to them on long term loan and that's all the story given.

Well, when jenny and myself were out on the opening day giving a talk to the college students about the exhibiton a few members of the public were around too. When we were finished a woman explained that she was the owner of the spinning wheel!
Was really nice to meet Joanna, seen here pictured, and learn that the wheel does have a bit of a story. Gives more meaning to the object.

Wool photographs

Had really good feedback on the images of my hand spun North Ronaldsay wool.

Looper  - A North Ronaldsay sheep which has jumped over the wall from the beach on to the land

Tangles - Seaweed

Pund - Enclosure for holding animals

Considering the feedback given I will be doing a limited number of prints. I am contactable on my email:
 kirstin_wish@hotmail.co.uk
Where I will be happy to discuss details, including any mounting and/or framing requirements.

Closing event

2-4pm on Saturday 21st February 2015.

Had a fantastic turn out and good feedback on the whole exhibition. Was a lovely afternoon.

Pre-exhibtion preparations

Had help folding snorrie-bone zines the evening before the closing event.

And then in the early afternoon before heading through to Stromness to the Pier Arts Centre my Granny, mother and me added the finishing touches to the canapés my Granny had made, for the closing afternoon.

Sturt is open

During set-up I had a GoPro running a time lapse as means of documentation of the process.
This shows the beginning where myself and Jenny are contemplating the day ahead!

It all worked well and was not the stressful experience thought it may have been.

Yesterday was the first day it was open and had to a talk to fellow college students. Also a few members of the public were around, including a woman who revelealed that the spinning wheel I had borrowed from For Arts Sake was hers she had given to them on long term loan!

Wearing down the shoe leather

Today myself and Jenny walked up and down the street handing out posters to local shops. We dispensed 29 posters! And that's just Kirkwall. Feet is a bit sore the night now though!

Local paper

It is exciting to see this! Becoming more and more real now.

Was it meant to be...?

This caught my eye tonight on the Pier Arts Centre Facebook page.

Sylvia Wishart is indeed a relative, first cousin of mine.

Perhaps today was meant to be the day that all the poster and invites were meant to be sent out. Taking it as a good omen!

Exhibition poster

Sturt means 'movement' in the Orkney dialect. It seemed very fitting for both of our works as well as being a movement in terms of progression of our art practice.

Spinning top

I have received this from my granny, it is a spinning top my grandad made from an old thread bobbin. Is a very good working spinning top too

Spinning wheel photographs

To go along with the wool images I had framed I also ordered enlargements of the black and white spinning wheel photographs. Got them framed up to match the other images

Creating interest through media (2 weeks until exhibition opens)

Been working really hard to ensure have Press Release sorted for sending our to local media sources tomorrow. Including a photograph....

We couldn't decide ourselves which one to use, the serious hardworking image or the happy, cheery workers so both have been sent off for others to decide for us!
