Portfolio and textile courses exhibition

Up to the college this evening to see the opening of the exhibition- as usual plenty of talent on show.

The degree students got a slide show of images to be viewed by the public, my work is on the left screen of the image.

Very sad news of a serious fire breaking out at the GSA http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-27544122

Heartbreaking for those students who's years of work went up in smoke!

Work is down

Trip to the PAC

Went a run out to the pier arts centre with a fellow college student to see the latest exhibition- 'living colour- artists animated films'

Was a bit different to see all of the downstairs gallery spaces darkened with windows covered up to enable the films to be projected on the walls.

There were better films than others, some which you simply couldn't watch as was just so flashy!

Couldn't help but notice this too...
...'repeaped' !!

This was drawn onto the wall with a pencil using circular scribble marks and a stencil. Was quite quirky!

Semester 2, year 2 completed!

Photographs are merely an aid to show what I did as an installation at the college. It's best viewed in darkness for a start and there is the 3 generation of orcadian voices to hear as well. So it's really one of those things that you have to be there to experience it first hand. Glad that, that is the deadline over with it's really been a stressful week!

Thursday already?!

Cannot believe that it's Thursday all these days at the college has sort off become one! My flat is somewhere I merely go to rest my head at night and eat my breakfast this week!

Anyway, today things are really in end of semester mode everything done as much as I can do without moving the white background walls around which can't do until Friday after moving all the furniture out of the studio... all hands to deck tomorrow morning. So apart from a few last minute mounts to do I've been more sketchbook based writing an evaluation -still have a statement to do yet along with some instructions to my piece - never had to leave instructions  for work before, it's always been a case of here is a pretty picture to look at on the wall. Bog standard, no explanation needed.

So tomorrow is D-(eadline) Day. 4pm. Elective essay is in, frankly that hacked off with it (putting it politely here!) just submitted it so it's out of the way now so it's all set-up final touches tomorrow. Be a nice relief to get this all done and I will enjoy a well deserved beverage  :)

Calling this finished...for now

And that is Tuesday done.
I have the final touches added to the dome, 10 meters of black ribbon! All edges covered up, looking a lot neater now. Completed video sketches as well, tidied up my work space only to realise that the space is not big enough for me to move the dome into, Urgh!!! Another thing added to the list for tomorrow to do.

FRIDAAAAAAAY

This is the end of Monday and with work all day and this frustrating essay for my elective still dragging on - lots of drafts and tweeking -  I have nothing done nothing in the way of creative practice work! Went up to the college for an hour or so to print off prints for mounting , with the computers being as slow as anything anyway best to use them at night when it's quiet student wise...this will change over the next few nights!
So all go as of tomorrow!!!

Simple and effective

Love these!

Travelling gallery

These are borrowed images from the travelling gallery- which is a transformed bus that tours around Scotland with an exhibition. This particular exhibition was Rachel MacLeans 'I heart Scotland'

She focuses on Scottish national identity and it's founding mythologies. The exhibition consisted of prints, like the one below, and a film entitled 'The lion and The Unicorn'
Dark humour is how I would describe it! Very thought provoking especially with the referendum being a hot topic these days

Development

Was thinking what I would put inside the dome. Orcadian words are fantastic looking in written form but more often than not are pronounced completely different. So I have a dictaphone ordered but not sure if it will be home in time so I tried this idea today, but not inside the dome in case I didn't like it, so tried this inside the big wire balls.
I feel it works really well. These words have become caged, trapped, isolated from the world and not easy accessible.

The dome

It's not in it's final glory yet I'm getting there though. Sheets have to be stretched but can't do that until I get more pipe in the middle to get a more complete shape.
Installed lights into the inside which I think look good, and the tape in the middle. Going along with language being a barrier idea now
More to come yet, but it's starting to take shape

Long days

With deadlines looming it does mean long hours of putting in the work. This is how I ended yesterday though

I need to change the medium in which I work!

Presentation

My presentation went well on Tuesday... its now Sunday before I'm remembering to update this!

I felt my use of 'props' of my 3D pieces was a good tool, and incorporating my Orcadian Quiz to test the audience of their knowledge of Orcadian words was a great way to engage the audience.  Was very varied answers I received! Here is an example question...

Snorrie – bone

•1 – A type of bone in the head causing snoring

•2 – Toy that makes a snoring noise

•3 – An implement to gut fish

A Snorrie bone in fact is number2 –
Toy that made a snoring noise

Typically made from a bone with string/twine and when there was enough tension it would make a snoring noise along the string

Getting stressed about writing an essay about stress...

I have one more essay to complete to end my anatomy and physiology elective, but with the added strain of distance learning it's proved not to be very straightforward! Half way through it none the less.
As well as this essay I have to finalise my professional practice folder ensuring I have addressed all 4 sections from the outline given at the start of the semester. Both of these have a deadline of the 9th May, then I can purely focus on my creative practice where the 16th is the deadline.
